After disrupting U.S. commerce for weeks, the coronavirus pandemic is expected to financially devastate to the nation’s citizens and businesses. To mitigate the economic effects, President Donald Trump signed the $2.2 trillion coronavirus stimulus package, an act that Ivanka Trump described as the “boldest action in history.”
“President Donald Trump took the boldest action in history to provide emergency relief for American workers and families—and to preserve our nation's small businesses,” Ivanka Trump wrote in an op-ed published by The Kansas City Star, according to Newsweek.
Ivanka Trump also highlighted how the pandemic “threatened the health, safety, and livelihoods of millions around the world—including here in the United States.”
As a result, people had to make drastic changes to their daily routine by observing distancing and isolation to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. “In order to curb the spread of the highly-contagious virus, we have had to work from home, transition to distance learning, and temporarily manage a new way of life,” Ivanka Trump wrote.
The situation could be problematic for workers who have no paid family and sick leaves as they will be forced to decide between risking their health to earn a living or staying at home to escape the virus but earning no income.
“No American should have to make these decisions,” Ivanka wrote. “Lack of access to paid leave hurts vulnerable communities—such as low-income workers and their children and elderly parents—the most.”
That is where the $2.2 trillion coronavirus bill could help. Under the legislation, each adult will receive a one-time payment of $1,200 while each child will receive $500, the NY Times reported. Unemployment benefits will be extended and enhanced while small businesses can apply for loans if they keep their workers.
“This emergency relief bill puts American workers and families first—and provides the supports that small businesses need to keep them employed,” Ivanka Trump said. She also promised that President Donald Trump will “continue to prioritize hardworking families” in the months ahead.
“Thanks to the president's decisive leadership, we will stem the outbreak of the virus, protect the health and well-being of our citizens, and we will emerge from this in the strongest position for our economy to soar to even greater heights,” the senior White House advisor wrote.
