The United States President Donald Trump is currently facing an impeachment trial at the Senate while running a reelection campaign in this year’s presidential elections. Even though he does not need to be present at the trial, his statements on social media suggest that the Democrats are reportedly weaponizing impeachment.
As both sides of the court at the Senate are currently laying out their arguments as to why Trump should or should not be removed from office, Trump was ranting on social media. Politicalflare reports that Trump tweeted that 21 attorney generals from 21 states are asking to reject impeachment due to the articles being presented having legal and factual problems. The President went on to say that the Democrats are laying out a case that could possibly set a dangerous precedent.
In all caps, Trump began a rant about how even an unsuccessful attempt to impeach the president would compromise the integrity of the 2020 elections as it weaponizes the impeachment process, a process that should only be used on very rare occasions. Simply put, Trump’s tweets seem to imply how he is also using foreign policy as leverage in order to get an edge over his political rivals, one of them being Democratic candidate and former vice president Joe Biden.
Meanwhile, at the trial, Telegraph reports that the Democratic congressmen have continued laying out their arguments against Trump. The second day of the Senate impeachment trial focused on one of his main charges which was abuse of power. The prosecution brought up the President’s violation of withholding $400 million of Congress-approved military aid to Ukraine while asking for an investigation into Biden and how it “undercuts his country’s interests.”
New York Democrat Jerry Nadler argued that Trump’s actions “captured the worst fears of founders and framers of the Constitution.” Nadler then went on to point out that “This conduct is not America first, it’s Donald Trump first,” referencing Trump’s slogans during the 2016 elections. Nadler drove his point further by saying that even former President Nixon would be ashamed.
As of now, there have been some signs of the 53 Republicans in the Senate who are being swayed by the case laid out by the Democrats.
